Cost:
Life-Cycle Analysis Shows Dramatic Payback

Through life-cycle analysis of installations like these, architects and engineers have found that naturally-durable hardwoods are less expensive than other materials -- and they retain their value throughout their useful life. Installation on a per-square-foot basis using these woods is less expensive than using any plastic products or similar grades of redwood, cedar or pine. Long-term maintenance costs are negligible -- and there's virtually no hassle of clients claiming product-performance failure, or making call backs.

This cost-savings-beyond-installation benefit (critical to calculating the real life-cycle cost equation) deserves emphasis and becomes exponentially clear when Iron Woods are installed and compared to other woods or plastics in real-life applications. George Savistano City Engineer's description of the Ocean City boardwalk installation in the mid-90s illustrates this clearly:

"To provide a comparison for performance of the Ipe hardwood to the southern yellow pine predominantly in place on the boardwalk, consider that in a three-week period from mid-April of 1996 to the first week of May, city forces expended approximately 100 man-hours in isolated boardwalk decking repairs and replacements. We estimate that in the three-month period from June through August, over 700 man-hours will be expended on boardwalk repairs and replacements. These repairs and replacements will be necessary due to deterioration resulting in unacceptable and/or unsafe conditions, or failure of the pine decking. The above labor expenditures are related to the pine decking alone. For the hardwood deck from 20th to 23rd Street, city forces have expended approximately eight man-hours in the past six years for repairs and replacements."
"In addition to its maintenance-free characteristics, Ipe has proven to be a material that does not warp or splinter. From a safety standpoint, based on structural integrity and durability, Ipe is an outstanding material choice."

OM - Operation, Maintenance
No Specific Maintenance Required

Iron Woods brand Ipe requires no specific maintenance -- no chemical preservatives or water-repellent sealers, to maintain their durability. If left unsealed, Iron Woods will weather to a natural silver gray patina.

Sealers may be applied and periodically reapplied to maintain the natural preweathered color.

"It has received about every type of punishment and use test known, and remains in essentially the same condition as when constructed. It retains its surface without splintering, checking or other types of wood deterioration. Its structural integrity and beauty is totally intact with no maintenance attention other than sweeping or removing beachrock, boulders, and lake debris thrown onto it during fall and spring off-lake storms," notes Kent Worley, landscape architect regarding the performance of Iron Woods after 10 years service on the Duluth, Minnesota Lakefront Boardwalk.

AI - Assembly, Installation
Installation Guidelines:

Material Handling and Storage
IRON WOODS are supplied as partially air dried lumber and are primarily for outdoor use. Material should be stored out of direct sunlight and be allowed to acclimate and stabilize to the installation environment humidity levels before installation. Allow for ground side ventilation in your design as proper air circulation through the structure is necessary for long term stability. When installing there should be a minimum 1/16'' gap between deck boards to aid in air circulation and drainage. When fully acclimated some minimal shrinkage can be expected.

Cutting and Drilling
Due to the density of IRON WOODS, premium carbide tipped sawblades and high quality drill bits are recommended for smooth cuts. Predrill board ends when using all types of fasteners to reduce splitting. Predrill and countersink when using screws.

End Sealing
Seal all ends immediately after cutting with a clear aqueous wax end sealer (available from THL), in order to reduce end checking.

Fastening
Stainless steel fasteners are generally considered to provide superior service life, and eliminate potential chemical reactions or staining of the wood at the fastener. Coated or galvanized steel fasteners can be used; however they generally have a shorter service life and may cause staining.

Gluing
Iron Woods are somewhat difficult to glue and we have generally recommended epoxy type glues.

We recommend that when using any type of glue that sample bonds be made and tested before use in any project. Contact THL Technical Department.

CS - Coatings, Surfacing

Sealing and Staining
We recommend that Iron Woods be sealed upon installation to assist in the acclimation process and reduce the potential for surface checking. Penetrating oil based sealers with pigmentation and UV inhibitors are generally found to provide superior performance over water based sealers. Do not over apply sealers. Excessive application of oil based sealers may create a sticky surface and will not extend their performance. We recommend that when using any type of paint that sample applications be made and tested before use in any project. Contact THL Technical Department.

Painting
Periodically we receive inquiries from people interested in painting Iron Woods. Contact THL Technical Department. We recommend that when using any type of paint that sample applications be made and tested before use in any project.

To the best of our knowledge this information is accurate; However, due to the variance of products grown in nature, CECCO Trading cannot assume any liability or suitability for the use of these products and it is the sole responsibility of the installer to adequately test and determine the final applications. Follow all manufacturers recommended application instructions when using proprietary products.
